Water supply scheme expected to alleviate shortages
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
Hazelmere Dam - which provides water to the eThekwini and Ilembe Municipalities as well as Sembcorp Siza Water - is currently sitting at around 31-percent.
The entity's Shami Harichunder says while levels have increased slightly - there is still insufficient water in the dam to meet the full needs of eThekwini and iLembe.
Water restrictions remain in place. Harichunder says the transfer of water from the oThongathi river to Hazelmere Dam has allowed for some stability.
"We anticipate that by April or May of 2016 the Lower Tugela Bulk Water Supply Scheme will be commissioned and will begin supplying water to much of Ilembe including Ballito", he said.
"As a result of water being transported by the scheme from Mandeni to Ballito it will mean there will be more water available in the Hazelmere dam to supply and meet the needs of eThekwini and customers north of the city", Harichunder said.
