Water shortage: Ugu in talks with unions, councillors

Ugu Municipality officials are meeting with municipal union representatives and ward councillors to resolve issues  believed to be behind the latest water cuts in some areas of the south coast.

Spokesperson for the DA caucus in Ugu, George Henderson says hundreds of homes and businesses have been affected.

"In some areas, it's been two days, four days without water.  Totally without water. It stretches from Hiberdene, Gamalakhe, inland and in the rural areas. They are all without water," Henderson said.

Workers affiliated to SAMWU are said to be upset over deductions to their salaries for not coming to work during an illegal strike late last year.

The municipality claims the employees have interfered with water infrastructure, cutting off supply.

Spokesperson, France Zama says the workers also want suspended shop stewards to be brought back.

"For some reasons known to them, they decided to interrupt and disrupt the municipal council meeting. So, we have taken firm steps by suspending them. Now, some of their demands are aligned to that they want to be reimbursed," Zama said.

Zama says they're working on contingency plans.

Municipal workers' union, SAMWU said yesterday its members were not behind the alleged tampering.
