The Tongaat Water Treatment Water Works was shut down today after high voltage cables were damaged after they allegedly tampered with by cable thieves.

The facility supplies power to several reservoirs - affecting Emona Reservoir, Hambanathi, Metcalfe, Belvedere, Tongaat Mamba Ridge, Jon Roz and Burbreeze reservoirs.

This is set to leave a number of areas with water cuts and interruptions over the coming days.

The City's Msawakhe Mayisela say the facility requires, ‘major repairs’.

“The electricity department is on site to repair those cables, so we are also appealing to the public to be vigilant and assist us to isolate and identify these criminals in the communities who are hell bent at damaging the infrastructure of the city,” Mayisela.

This is another blow to the municipality’s water supply after ongoing interruptions in southern and western parts of the city earlier this month.
