Taps have run dry in many homes and businesses in the Ugu district again,  with some complaining of dirty water.

The department's Sputnik Ratau says they're working with Umgeni Water to find long term solutions.

"We need to look at how we can make sure that the municipality is able to repair, especially the infrastructure on the ground so that there are fewer leaks that can lead to water losses," said Ratau.

We look at whether we can get water outside of the system that is currently supplying Ugu.

The department's currently implementing emergency water relief in drought-affected areas.

Ratau says teams have been busy at the Greytown Water Treatment Works.

"The reestablishing and the upgrading of the aging infrastructure."

"We know that the infrastructure there has been around for quite a bit. We are unclogging those grading systems as well as installing new connecting pipes that is going to lose water availability," he added.
