Residents of an Umdloti complex which partially collapsed say they grabbed what they could before running out as the building rumbled and crumbled.

The small seaside town north of Durban was one of the areas hardest hit by this weekend's floods.

A crater filled with mud, concrete and debris now lies where apartments once sat overlooking the ocean.

Newswatch found residents whose homes caved into the gully scurrying to try and get what they could before any further collapse.

Clinton Bullard said they were at a function on Saturday evening when neighbours called them to come back home.

"It was a raging river from our front gate. We couldn't get through the front door. We ran into the house waist-deep in water and grabbed a bag with our passports and valuable stuff, which we had actually packed during the last floods.

"While this was going on, the building was actually crashing on our neighbour's property and the front units were going down. You fear for your life."

Another elderly homeowner said part of his home collapsed, taking with it his bedroom and lounge.

He said his home was his life.

"When the building started shaking, I got out with a shirt and shorts and a raincoat. No wallet, no anything."

Another resident said they aren't sure if the block will survive another round of heavy rains.

"We feel angry, we feel like nothing has been done after the first floods which they have learnt a lot about and the paper work seems to be covering everything and not action."

Over 200 people had to be evacuated from their homes this weekend, most from the Umdloti area.
