The TV star died at the age of 80 in hospital in Connecticut in the US, after battling diabetes for years. She had undergone brain surgery in 2011.

The famous hat toss became a trademark after being featured at the beginning every episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. The series was televised from 1970 to 1977.

In 1980, she starred in a family drama, Ordinary People, which earned her an Oscar nomination - while her role in "Whose Life Is It Anyway?" bagged her a Tony Award.

Confirming her death, her longtime representative Mara Buxbaum said this in a statement:

"Today, beloved icon Mary Tyler Moore passed away at the age of 80 in the company of friends and her loving husband of over 33 years, Dr. S. Robert Levine. A groundbreaking actress, producer, and passionate advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Mary will be remembered as a fearless visionary who turned the world on with her smile."
