Police Minister Bheki Cele visited the area on Wednesday evening, where he received an update on the unrest in the area and during which warehouses were severely damaged.

This as law enforcement agencies and some community leaders are continuing with attempts to quell the violence in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

Thousands of people have looted malls and destroyed properties for a sixth consecutive day, disrupting the supply of services and goods and services to a complete halt.

Cele says law enforcement cannot accept the excuse that people are hungry as a reason to steal ammunition.

“It is exactly what we have been saying, it is a smokescreen this thing of saying people are hungry and looting. We are not saying there are no hungry people but if you are hungry, this is not what you steal. This is 10 thousand rounds of ammunition, a box which has been opened and too many of them are looted,” said Cele.

Cele has maintained that police and other law enforcement agencies are working hard to bring the situation under control and restore law and order.

“We are working to mop up and move forward. The security measures we have taken starting from Gauteng is to arrest the situation, reverse it and prevent and I think it has started to work. Four of the places that we visited, it is only one place that has been vandalized, the prevention methods have worked,” added a confident Cele.
