The anti-apartheid struggle icon died on this day in 1977, while in police custody.
Biko was sought by police following the Soweto Uprising in 1976, in which he and the Black Consciousness Movement played a significant role.
He was arrested at a roadblock in Port Elizabeth on 18 August 1977.
Biko suffered a severe head injury while being interrogated at the Walmer Police Station, in a suburb of Port Elizabeth.

#SteveBiko's life was cut short aged 31, I didn't see you in flesh, but your ideals continue to flourish, you are a gallant hero. #RIPSteve

Our "freedom" is owed to the real liberators of this country, people who actually fought & lost their lives for it. #SteveBiko not #MKMVA
