WATCH: Search for two municipal workers after vehicle found in Umdloti River
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal and Lauren Beukes
The search continues for the occupants of a vehicle that was found floating in a river in Durban.
The alarm was raised on Monday after a member of the public spotted part of its roof sticking out of the Umdloti River in Ogunjini, north of Durban.
Emergency services members swam out to the vehicle and found no one inside it.
The police's search and rescue division was called out to extend the search in the river but nothing has turned up yet.
It's believed two people were inside the vehicle.
Reaction Unit South Africa's Prem Balram says they have been told one of the men is from the area and has not been seen since Saturday’s floods.
"He is presumed drowned. He went missing on Saturday afternoon. According to his family, we interviewed them this morning again, they informed us that the missing man was on route from a funeral in Harry Smith.
"He got closer to the Durban area, he contacted his family and informed them he'd be home shortly. He has not been heard of since. Now we are about to lift off with a helicopter crew."
The South African Municipal Workers Union says the occupants of the car are municipal workers.
The union says their disappearance is worrying.
It's accusing eThekwini Municipality of dereliction of duty for remaining silent.
Newswatch has contacted the city for confirmation and comment and is awaiting its response.
