WATCH: Sardines make surprise appearance on KZN shores
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
Sardines have descended on the KZN south coast today.
Strong winds and high sea swells have assisted in bringing the sardines closer to shore, at Scottburgh main beach.
Authorities have removed shark net gear from beaches along the south coast including Scottburgh, Umgababa, and Karridene.
The KZN Sharks Board's Mike Anderson-Reade says it's a good sign as KZN missed the sardine run, anticipated annually, in the last three years.
"Normally, the fish would come from the Wild Coast in the Eastern Cape - with all the associated activity of gannets diving, dolphins and sharks - moving up the coast then disappear. These fish did not come up the coast. I suspect they have come offshore in which makes it difficult to try and judge where and if they're going to come gain," he said.
