The first Maritime Domain Awareness Satellite constellation (MDASat-1) was launched as part of the United States aerospace company SpaceX's Transporter-3 mission.

The SA satellites were among more than 100 other spacecraft on SpaceX's third dedicated rideshare mission.

This includes CubeSats, microsats, PocketQubes and orbital transfer vehicles.

Prior to the launch, Science and Technology Minister Blade Nzimande hailed the latest development as a ‘giant leap for mankind’.

“This will further cement South Africa's position as an African leader in small satellite development, and help the country to capture a valuable share of a niche market in the fast-growing global satellite value chain,” said Nzimande.

“This satellite launch is a significant milestone for South Africa.

“Our participation in this is also very important in contributing to our own economic development, which means the future is indeed here.”

The satellites are expected to contribute to monitoring the country’s oceans, data collection and job creation.

Nzimande added the work done by SA scientists will go a long way in bolstering the country’s academic offering and global contribution to science and innovation..
