WATCH: Ramaphosa wants permanent G20 membership for AU
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
President Cyril Ramaphosa used the first day of the G20 leaders’ summit to advocate for the African Union to have permanent membership in the body.
He was speaking during the working session on Food & Energy Security.
Ramaphosa arrived in Bali, Indonesia for the annual summit on Monday.
"In this regard, this can be best achieved with the African Union joining the G20 as a permanent member. It is only through a collective and united response that we can resolve the challenges of food and energy insecurity across our world."
South Africa is currently the only African member of the G20.
Ramaphosa is accompanied by International Relations Minister Naledi Pandor and Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana.
Global health issues following the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as a sustainable energy transition, and digital transformation are some of the items on the agenda.
Ramaphosa is also expected to have bilateral meetings with other heads of state and government on the sidelines of the summit.
