Updated | By Portia Cele
Outgoing US president, Barack Obama has awarded 21 outstanding Americans - including philanthropists, sports veterans and artists - with the Presidential Medal of Honour.

This award is the US's highest honor to be awarded to ordinary citizens who have made contributions to world peace, cultural or other crucial public or private endeavours.
One of our favourite recipients - comedian and talk show host Ellen Degeneres - was praised for her contributions to the gay rights movement. "In every role she reminds us to be kind to one another and to treat people as each of us wants to be treated. At pivotol moments, her courage and candor helped change the hearts and minds of Americans," the announcer said as she received the honour.
While Microsoft founder, Bill Gates and his wife Melinda ( who drive the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation which supports initiatives in education and global health) were among the 21 recipients.
Obama has awarded at least 114 medals in total during his tenure - exceeding the number of any previous president.
Speaking during the ceremony - the head of state said he was awarding those "who have lifted our spirits, strengthened our union, pushed us towards progress."
