Updated | By Steve Bhengu and Andrew Robertson
Emergency services are franticly rushing to the scene of an explosion at the Engen Oil Refinery in the Merebank area, off the M4 south highway, south of Durban.
Visuals sent to Newswatch show massive flames engulfing parts of the facility with thick plumes of smoke rising into the atmosphere. Others show nearby homes having been caught alight.
There's no confirmation around what sparked the explosion or how many workers have been injured.
A number of medical and emergency services are rushing to the scene.
Metro police spokesperson Parboo Sewpersadh said: "The scene is still active. Emergency service units are responding to the scene."
He's urging motorists who'd planned to travel past the refinery this morning to find alternate routes.
"Motorists are urged to stay away from Quality Street and Tara Road area. There's been a confirmed explosion at the Engen Refinery. Motorists are urged also use alternative routes and plan their routes and to stay away from the area."
This is a developing story, more to follow.
