Officials were on hand to officially launch the facility at the Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone this morning.

The facility is a partnership between the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Mahindra South Africa and AIH Logistics.

The investment is to the tune of R95-million.

400 bakkies will be assembled in the first line of production, due to begin in July.

Once operating at full capacity, the plant will produce 4,000 vehicles per year.

MEC Sihle Zikalala says they want to become the main supplier of 4x4's to the rest of Africa.

"This will add to the economic growth of the country and province," he said.

Zikalala says the investment is good for business confidence.

"It continues to show that as KwaZulu-Natal, we are a conducive place for investors to invest. It also sends a message to those who remain reluctant that Durban is a place to consider when it comes to investment."
