The Education Union of SA says students at Ziphembeleni Secondary were horrified to find maggots in their amasi.

The union's Scelo Bhengu says they told their teachers and the principal.

"The principal decided to come again like last time to the learners and told them that this is not really maggots. I don't know what she decided to call it, but she decided to brush it off."

A video of the meal surfaced on social media on Monday.

Bhengu says the school's had issues before.

"It happened on the last week of March. I took a video again of a bag of samp that has some insects on it."

KZN Education spokesperson Kwazi Mthethwa said:  "Obviously, we are committed to ensuring that we provide healthy meals to all our learners in KZN schools.

"If it is that the food was off or it was not in a good state, then we will have to investigate. We will have to check with our officials quickly and confirm those details."
