WATCH LIVE: Ramaphosa to address nation amid Omicron concerns
Updated | By Newswatch
President Cyril Ramaphosa will address South Africans on Sunday evening amid a spike in Covid-19 cases and concern over a new variant in the country.
Ramaphosa is due to speak at 8pm.
The National Coronavirus Command council met on Saturday to discuss the discovery of the new variant, dubbed Omicron.
The announcement of the new variant lead to many countries around the world to ban flights from South Africa.
While Ramaphosa could announce a stricter lockdown, it seems more likely he will announce measures to speed up the country’s vaccination campaign.
Only 23.8 percent of the population is fully vaccinated compared to 54 percent of the world's population.
