WATCH LIVE: eThekwini council set to elect mayor
Updated | By Newswatch
eThekwini Municipality's inaugural council meeting is expected to resume on Wednesday afternoon after it ended prematurely on Monday.
Councillors are expected to elect a mayor and a deputy mayor.
The African National Congress (ANC) will be relying on the support of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) if they are to get their candidates elected.
But it remains to be seen if this will be the case, after the IFP, which had announced a deal with the ANC, made an about-turn this week and helped oust the ANC in other KwaZulu-Natal municipalities, including uMhlathuze.
At Monday's sitting at Moses Mabhida Stadium, the ANC's Thabani Nyawose was elected Speaker of the eThekwini Council amid chaotic proceedings.
There were constant points of order being raised, while late in the afternoon, ANC councillors insisted on breaking for lunch.
After the council reconvened, there was a sudden power failure at the venue.
A group of ANC supporters also arrived and stormed the venue, prompting the police to intervene to calm the situation down.
The meeting had to be adjourned.
