Johannesburg emergency services responded to calls from several parts of the city following a burst of hail that damaged vehicles, homes, and hotel properties.
On Monday evening, motorists flooded social media with videos of the their damage caused to vehicles and properties by the unexpected hail.
The storm hit parts of Midrand around 6 pm on Monday evening.
Joburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi says officials had a busy night responding to emergencies.
"The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Service officials had a busy Monday night responding to a hail incident which affected mostly parts of Rosebank, Paulshof, Midrand, Braamfontein, Marlboro and most parts of the city of Johannesburg.
"Mostly the reports were about the damage to vehicles, there was an incident of a household that was flooded in Marlboro and we managed to assist the families in draining the water together with the communities in the area," says Mulaudzi.
Parts of the Southern Sun Hotel in Rosebank were also affected by the hail.
"There was an incident of roof collapse but there were no injuries reported," says Mulaudzi.
"The people who were around the area were evacuated, and there were no injuries reported from people who were around the hotel itself."
Mulaudzi says they also responded to an incident were a person fell into the drain in Soweto.
"The lady was assisted by our paramedics, and she was later transported to the nearest health facility for further medical care," he adds.
He says the emergency team is on standby for any eventualities.
"We remain on high alert monitoring all our seven regions in the City of Johannesburg. We urge motorists to exercise caution while driving and residents in low-lying areas to try and avoid crossing river streams," says Mulaudzi.
