WATCH: Durban South community protest outside Engen refinery
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Durban south families, up in arms over Friday's devastating explosion at the Engen oil refinery, are demonstrating outside the complex in Merebank.
Paramedics last week treated seven people for smoke inhalation.
Flames from the blast torched nearby flats and left many residents shaken.
Between 300 and 400 people from the Wentworth and surrounding areas have come out to the facility.
They have been led by some local organisations.
They say they fed up with the manner the refinery has a disregard of their existence which is apparent in the amount of pollution, lack of safety protocol and non-engagement on essential matters over the years.

Residents say their relatives have suffered respiratory issues and have linked this to the refinery.
So far, various leaders from the group gathered addressing the crowd before a memorandum is to be handed over.
SAPS and Metro officers are out in their numbers and ready for anything at what is a peaceful and well-organised gathering.
