WATCH: Dog rescued from open manhole in Verulam
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
There are calls for all open manholes in Durban to be covered after a trapped dog was rescued from one in Verulam.
The canine said to be a husky, was stuck in a deep and narrow manhole for hours over the weekend.
A security officer says he heard the animal in distress while patrolling Cottonlands.
He found a group of people around the manhole.
Xolani Mfeka, from KZN VIP security, says the residents told him they heard the dog whimpering and crying at night.
In a video, Mfeka is seen being lowered into the tight space and landing on dirty water below.
The scared dog had hidden in a tunnel.
"That manhole was left by one of the constructors, and the community said one the day I interviewed them that it was left open and unattended. Even for a normal human, it would have been a problem."
He says the situation could've been avoided if the manhole wasn't left exposed.
