A Ballito videographer and his crew have claimed top spot in the World’s Largest Short Film Competition with their film Amanzi Olwandle or Ocean water.
The short film shot in the Transkei near Port St. Johns, follows a true story about a surfer who lost his brother to a shark attack.
The film trumped entries from 114 countries to be named My RØDE Reel 2020 judge's choice.
Videographer, Timothy Hay says the team was pretty 'stoked' to hear they won and claim the 200 000 US dollar cash prize.
"We didn't really enter this to win we were actually trying to hone our skills and get better at what we do."
"I think that kind of resonates in the film, our passion projects always come out better because it's your blood, it's your work you put all your passion into it and you feel good about it," says Hays.
My RØDE Reel judge Ryan Connolly praised the film calling it an excellent piece of cinematography. Rock-solid pace, well-acted, and a ton of heart.
He continued on to say that it conveyed its emotion and story effortlessly while showing a lot of respect for its audience.
