"The M4 Southern Freeway incoming is closed at Margaret Mncadi and Moore Road. This is due to the fire at China Mall,” says eThekwini metro police spokesperson Parboo Sewpersad.

“Dr Pixley KaSeme Street, formerly Durban's West Street and Brook Street, remain closed.”

Thirteen people were evacuated from the building on Friday, while a few were treated for injuries.

Firefighters say they had to work throughout the weekend to contain the fire that gutted the complex.

Investigations are underway into its cause.

Divisional Commander, Sifiso Mtshali says they had to extinguish the flames from outside the complex as the building's integrity was compromised.

He says they were told the fire broke out in a generator room on the first floor.

"We did try to extinguish the fire. I believe it also negated due to the fact that we caught quite later after the incident had started.

"We were informed by residents that they controlled the fire using their hoses. We were then dispatched later when the fire broke out and was out of control.”

Meanwhile, environmental health officials say fumes and smoke are now an issue.

The city's Lindiwe Khuzwayo is advising residents in and around the area to take care of themselves for a few days.

"Residents close to central Durban are advised to protect themselves against smoke emanating from a building fire in the CBD. They are also advised to keep their windows closed until the smoke has dissipated.”
