Warning of dry taps in parts of eThekwini

eThekwini has warned that some areas might experience water supply interruptions during a planned 24-hour shutdown of the Durban Heights Water Treatment Plant - for maintenance.

Durban residents are fuming about a water outage that affected large parts of the city related to an eThekwini municipality labour dispute that has disrupted services.

Teams need to continue with repairs to Aqueduct-2.

The large pipeline which supplies raw water to the plant for purification was washed away during the April floods in 2022.

The city's Siyabonga Maphumulo says the shutdown will begin at midnight on Wednesday.

He says a large number of areas will be affected, including Umhlanga, Durban North, Westville, Phoenix, Ntuzuma, KwaMashu, Pinetown, Verulam, Queensburgh, and Chatsworth.

"The planned maintenance shutdown requires the isolation of the aqueduct to allow for inspection. Depending on the outcomes thereof, a carbon fibre repair kit will be installed on those identified sections of the aqueduct.

"During this time pf the eThekwini Metro will experience a reduced supply of water, we expect parts of the northwest and south of the eThekwini Metro to experience some disruption in the water pressure."
