Wage talks continue in coal sector
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
Wage negotiations in the coal mining sector are set to continue amidst an indefinite strike.
About 30 000 National Union of Mineworkers downed tools on Sunday.
NUM wants a 13% pay hike or R1000 more for the lowest paid workers. The Chamber of Mines is offering R300.
The chamber's Charmane Russell says they will continue to negotiate until an agreement is reached.
"We do believe that in the end we will reach a settlement, it just depends on how long it's going to take. Companies and employees stand to lose a lot more.
"If you consider the industry as it is at the moment, it's at a [volatile] situation with falling prices and many job losses that have already been experienced in the coal sector," she said.
