Wage increase for farming, forestry sector
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Workers in the farming and forestry sectors will soon take home more at the end of every month.
Increases to the minimum wage for both sectors kick in from March 1.
The daily rate for workers will go up from just over R120 to about R128.
Employees will now earn about R2606 a month.
The Department of Labour is encouraging farm owners to comply with the new adjustments.
Spokesperson Mokgadi Pela says they understand that not all employers will be able to afford the increases due to the current drought. He says provisions have been made for them.
"Employers who cannot afford this increase should apply for what we call variation meaning they would need to explain financial reasons why they cannot afford this increase," he said.
