Voting kicks off for next US president

Americans are voting today for Barack Obama's successor, choosing between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump, who have been described as two of the most unpopular presidential candidates yet.

Wits University's Tinashe Chuchu says the fact that Trump is a political outsider, has put the cat among the pigeons.

"No one thought someone without government experience, political or military experience like Donald Trump would become the nominee of the party, and right now it's so difficult for experts to actually say with certainty that the election is going to go to Hillary - even though the polls are pointing that way," he said.

Chuchu says Clinton's proximity to Obama has weighed her down on the economy and job creation matters.

"You'll see in any election or in any country, all that is blamed on the president because the president blames policy. And what's happening is that people are blaming Obama in turn they blame Hillary, because they believe that Hillary Clinton would be a continuation of Barack Obama. That's what has catapulted Donald Trump to where he is," he said.

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton and her husband, Bill have cast their vote near her home in New York.
