VIP protectors 8 could hear bail fate on Thursday

The eight VIP police officers accused of assaulting three motorists on the N1 in Johannesburg could know on Thursday if they will be granted bail.

The affidavits of accused two to eight were read in court on Wednesday.
They face Schedule 1 offences, and none have previous convictions.

Their lawyers argued that keeping them in custody would not be in the interest of justice, as the State has failed to positively identify them as the culprits in the assault video.
They were part of Deputy President Paul Mashatile's security detail at the time of the incident.

NPA Gauteng spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane says the State believes the accused should remain behind bars.
"We cited the reasons of threats being sent to our witnesses at the State, and therefore, for their protection and for the reasons that they fear for their lives, we believe that it is in the hands of this court to provide the necessary protection.”
