Violent protests erupt in Melmoth

Police are monitoring the situation in Melmoth, in northern KwaZulu-Natal, after violent protests there on Tuesday morning.

The cause of the demonstration isn't yet clear.
Authorities say the situation on the R66 and R68 remains tense.

The police's Nqobile Gwala says they're asking motorists to use other routes.
"We can confirm there is a protest this morning in Melmoth where the community members blockaded the R66 and R68 roads.
"They are also blockading with burning tyres and tree branches. The road is still closed."
