Violent Isithebe protests continue
Emergency services are fighting fires at two factories in the north coast town.
Violent protests that saw several buildings, vehicles and containers being torched yesterday, bringing industry to a halt, erupted again in the early hours of this morning.
Four factories were reportedly petrol bombed last night. Thousands of people took to the streets yesterday unhappy over the appointment of an Induna in the area and the selection of candidates for the upcoming local government elections.
IPSS Medical Rescue's Paul Herbst said firefighters were still trying to douse the fires at two factories this morning.
"Unfortunately four additional factories were petrol bombed last night. The situation is very tense and very violent at the moment. The majority of the roads are blocked within the Isithebe industrial area. All the roads are actually blocked with burning trees and massive rocks.
"The guys was still trying gain access to some of the factories. Most of the security companies and law enforcement agencies have split up trying to control the situation," he said.
Police have been deployed to the area again this morning. Spokesperson Thulani Zwane says 120 people were arrested yesterday for public violence and will appear in court today.
