Surtie-Richards is best known for her role in the 1988 film adaptation of the Afrikaans novel 'Fiela se Kind', as well as popular soapies '7de Laan’ and 'Egoli'.

Fellow actress and friend Lizz Meiring says Surtie-Richards was found dead in a Cape Town guesthouse.

"It is surmised that she died peacefully in her sleep. There are no signs of trauma, of criminal activity or of suicide nor do we think it was Covid-related.”

It's understood the iconic actress was in Cape Town to film a TV series.

"As a close friend and colleague of Shaleen obviously am still in incredible shock and have not had a moment's time to even try and absorb this.

"But let me say this, the nation has lost a wonderfully warm, humorise clever, fun, funny person who has so much compassion."
