Verulam rape-accused returns to court after bail denied

The Verulam man accused of raping his 10-year-old stepdaughter is appearing in court today following an unsuccessful bid for bail.

The 43-year-old is facing charges of rape, sexual grooming, exposing a child to pornography and sexual assault.  

The accused has spent some two months in jail after being denied bail. Magistrate Khalil ruled that he will remain behind bars - as he could be a threat to the young girl.

The State believes the man raped the girl more than 900 times over five years. 

He allegedly kept her in a room away from family and neighbours. 

Neighbours raised the alarm after the girl - who's mother died five year's ago - told them about the abuse in June. The little girl is currently in a place of safety.
