Van Reenen’s Pass protestors demand murder suspect’s release
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
KwaZulu-Natal police say angry community members who held a demonstration that blocked access through Van Reenen's Pass on the N3 on Sunday had demanded the release of a murder suspect.
The community wanted to administer their own form of justice.
The mob also tried to storm the local police station.
Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says the crowd blocked a portion of the road with burning tyres and debris bringing traffic to a standstill.
He says they'd wanted to deal with the suspect themselves:
“One police officer was slightly injured when angry community members tried to storm into the police station. No other person was reported injured, except for the arrested suspect who had already sustained a stab wound prior to his arrest.”
The road was cleared late on Sunday afternoon.
