Durban resident Shalima Ramsanker and her family were at a holiday home on Collins Street near Shelly Beach when the incident occurred.

The family had been celebrating when gunmen gained entry into the complex on Saturday morning.

It's understood the 44-year-old Ramsanker was trying to close one of the doors, when the suspect shot her.

She died at the scene.

Ward 19 councillor George Henderson says it's the first time in many years that the relatively quiet area has had such a brutal incident.

"This is not an apartment where this happened, its actually a beautiful beach house that was built about two to three years ago.

"The people were celebrating their parents’ wedding anniversary, that was 4 o'clock in the morning, when this happened and they were still celebrating when these invaders came and started shooting."

Henderson says the area has an active Community Policing Forum that's been dealing with crimes such as petty theft.

"We on the south coast rarely get incidents like this and I can assure residents that we are on high alert because of this incident."

KZN police are investigating a case of murder and house robbery.

No arrests have been made.
