Using details of deceased people for R350 grant is criminal: Lindiwe Zulu

Social Development Minister says there are still people applying for the special COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant, knowing very well they don't qualify.

Lindiwe Zulu has been speaking at a briefing on the department’s social relief measures to mitigate the impact of COVID-19. 


"Over 3 million applicants were found to have other sources of income including those receiving social grants. 605 466 were registered for the UIF. 168 920 received NSFAS," she says. 


"Over 8 000 applicants were found to be using their personal particulars of deceased persons. This is not only illegal but criminal." 


She says the department has noticed a massive surge in the demand for food relief during the lockdown.

"The portfolio has dispatched 1.4 million food parcels that benefited over 7.1 million people throughout the country. 


Zulu says from April this year, there was also an increasing demand in the registration of  Non-Profit Organisations. 


"We have received 14 762 new applications for NPO registrations. Of this number, 9998 applications were processed, while 7669 were successfully registered."
