Use of water tankers, boreholes unsustainable, warns Mchunu
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu has appealed to municipalities to limit the use of water tankers and boreholes.

He says providing water through these sources was never meant to be a long-term solution to outages.
Areas in the north of Durban, including Phoenix, Tongaat and Verulam, have been plagued by intermittent water supply.

It's forced residents to rely on water tankers provided by eThekwini Municipality.
Mchunu says water from these sources cannot always be trusted.
"The use of tankers and boreholes is not one system that we should sustain. What we should sustain is pipe supplied water to citizens because that water is guaranteed.
"If you supply water via a tanker, it is not guaranteed that you get water from a source where water has been treated and is proper for the use of human beings. There are risks that go with tanker-supplied water, and we are discouraging that."
