LISTEN: Upper Highway residents breathing a sigh of relief
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
Residents from the Upper Highway area have welcomed the suspension of operations at waste management company Enviroserv's Shongweni Landfill.
Listen to full bulletin below.
Yesterday, the Environmental Affairs Department issued a statement saying it had decided to suspend the acceptance, treatment and disposal of waste at the firm's site near Hillcrest.
The suspension comes into effect within four working days of receipt of notice and will stay in place until officials notify EnviroServ in writing that the disposal of waste can continue and under what conditions.
Affected communities have over the past few weeks rallied in efforts to halt operations at the landfill - saying it was emitting an unbearable stench.
Residents have also claimed that the malodour is to blame for the health issues some residents of the area have been experiencing.
Listen to residents' reaction below.
