Upcoming Eskom tariff hikes 'another blow to citizens'
Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
Civil rights organisation OUTA says the upcoming tariff hikes by Eskom are another blow to the pockets of South Africans.
Energy regulator Nersa has allowed Eskom to recover an extra R6-billion from consumers.
OUTA's Energy Project Manager Liz McDaid says the power utility regularly increases tariffs but this time it'll be way above the cost-of-living.
She says this is simply not acceptable.
"This is not acceptable from a civil society point of view because we are stuck in a cycle of consistently getting electricity price increases", McDaid said.
"What's our reward? Lights going out whether we pay or not. It is clear something needs to be done a system level", she said.
