UP moves spring recess forward
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
The University of Pretoria (UP) has decided to move the October 2016 recess period forward following protest action on the Hatfield campus on Monday morning.
UP said in a statement a group of students attempted to block some entrances and to disrupt classes, despite the presence of the police and an interdict against unlawful protest.
"Over the past 24 hours, we have observed an escalation of student protests at several universities, calling for a so-called 'national shutdown'. University academic programmes have been especially targeted. Some of the protests have included violence or threats thereof. As a result, several universities, including WITS and UCT have been closed indefinitely," it said in a statement.
The university said the recess was moved forward in the interest of the safety of students, staff and property

"The recess will therefore start on 26 September 2016. The University will reopen on 10 October 2016 as planned for the start of the fourth quarter," it said.
UP requested students living in residences to leave the residences during this period and said arrangements for catch-up lectures and tests have been made.
"We will keep you informed of any further developments in this regard," it said.
