The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) says that cars in poor condition contribute to the high number of fatalities on our roads.

RMTC CEO, Makhosini Msibi, says vehicles which are not up to standard will be taken off the road.

“We'll be subjecting each and every vehicle to be tested. We know that our resources are minimal but we'll ensure at the major points - we'll have mobile testing units. You'll also agree that most fatalities arise from light motor vehicles. The notion that only taxis are unroadworthy is unfounded. We'll be testing those cars and discontinue them and arrest them.”

Meanwhile, a DJ is among the Johannesburg motorists that will appear in court on Monday. He was allegedly caught speeding around New Canada, south of the city on Friday.

Metro police officers nabbed the DJ at a roadblock.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Chief Superintendent, Wayne Minnaar, says they are very concerned
about motorists who are disregarding the rules of the road.

“On New Year's Eve (last year), there were 98 drunken drivers arrested, and there were also people arrested for extremely high speed. It's still very concerning because more than 90% of the accidents are attributed to human behaviour. We're still having accidents because in some cases, people are drinking and driving, which is a big concern.”
