UniZulu closes KwaDlangezwa campus following violent unrest

Management at the University of Zululand says the campus and on-campus residences at KwaDlangezwa will be shut from this afternoon and will remain closed until further notice.

The decision follows violent protests near the campus yesterday, sparked by an attack on a student at the weekend.

Msawenkosi Nxumalo was shot and wounded in a robbery at an off-campus residence on Sunday. He remains in hospital.

Students blocked the R102 with burning tyres, trees and stones yesterday. They are demanding better security at residences.

Police say they also torched a satellite police station last night.

 Police spokesperson, Thembeka Mbele says 30  students have been arrested for public violence.

Mbele says the students were due in court today.
