The National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT), student body COSAS and teachers union SADTU have called for urgent intervention in Limpopo.

More than 20 schools have been torched and vandalised during protests in the past few days.

NECT CEO Godwin Khoza says they were shocked by the cruel conduct and adults gambling with the future of children.

"It will cause irreversible damages to the cohort of learners that are affected. Worse we feel that the meagre resources available to rural learners have been further compromised by these mind boggling and self-sabotaging acts," he said.

COSAS secretary general Khulekani Skhosana echoed the sentiments saying the destruction of schools has become an ongoing trend during unrest throughout South Africa.

He called on government, police and civil society to speak out.

"It was workers day recently, we also want to get educated so that we can work. We expect every citizen to step up and call for order. When there was xenophobia in South Africa we were united to call it to order," he said.

The student body has given government five working days to address the situation in Vuwani.

They have warned that if nothing is done they will go there in their thousands to protect the schools themselves.
