Union wants KZN educators compensated for Saturday classes
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
Teacher union Natu says the department of education should not expect to be exempt from paying educators for teaching compulsory Saturday classes to grade 12s.
The union's Alan Thompson says it is important to have the classes in order to improve KZN's matric pass rate but teachers should be compensated as weekends are their own time.
He says the department has already issued instructions to principals that as of next week Saturday classes will begin at all government schools.
Thompson says they are disappointed in the department.
"It is not enough to encourage educators to teach on Saturdays and organise Saturday classes when the department is not prepared to compensate them during this winter vacation. Some educators have committed themselves and have been teaching," he said.
"The department had decided to identify certain individuals to be paid and have decided to not pay the rest of the educators," Thompson said.
