Union vows to revoke truck driver's membership following Phongolo crash
Updated | By Sandile Bhengu
The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) says it will revoke the membership of the truck driver involved in the horrific Phongolo crash if he belongs to the union.
Spokesperson for the transport workers group Amanda Tshemese says they are deeply saddened by Friday’s crash.
21 people, including 19 children, were killed when the truck slammed head on into a bakkie transporting pupils from school on the N2 on Friday.
The children were between the ages of 5 and 12 years.
"If he happens to be or member, he must face the law and we'll have no choice but to revoke his membership," says Tshemese.
The truck driver handed himself over to police on Saturday and is due to appear in court on Monday.
"Now that the suspect has handed himself over to the police, we will then know whether he's our member or not. At this stage we cannot confirm anything, we'll only know on Monday," Tshemese says.
"We are also calling on the Department of Education in the province to its internal investigation. We are of the view that a bakkie cannot contain such a big number and this was overload."
