Union urges provision of generators during matric exams
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The National Teachers’ Union has called on the Department of Basic Education to supply generators to schools during the upcoming matric exams.
The National Senior Certificate exams are set to start on Monday, 31 October and will finish on 9 December.
Natu says the supply of generators would help mitigate the impact of power interruptions during the writing of exams - especially in schools that offer computer-related subjects.
The union says it should be made a priority following reports last year of disruptions in some areas due to load shedding.
Natu’s Doctor Ngema says the power cuts are also affecting exam preparations.
“What they’ve done, the Department of Education, by talking and negotiating with Eskom to ensure that there is power on the days of the examinations, it’s just not sufficient.
“The Department of Education doesn’t have control over the programme of power saving of Eskom. What they do have control of is their schedule of examination. If they want to run hassle-free and high integrity examinations, they need to ensure that facilities are put in place to ensure that there is back-up of power.”
