Union: Matric papers rewrite second chance to improve

The National Teachers Union says the re-write of the two leaked matric exam papers offers learners a second chance to do better.

NATU was reacting to Basic Education Minister's Angie Motshekga announcement yesterday that the Mathematics paper 2 and Physical Sciences paper 2 will be re-written to protect the credibility and integrity of the examinations. The two papers were leaked nationally before they were written.

Both papers will be re-written on the 15th and 17th of December respectfully.

NATU President Allan Thompson says the union is not surprised by the minister's decision.

"We know there are some learners who feel they could have done better, so this is an opportunity for them to close the gap. There are some also did not do well in some sections so they must capitalise on the rewrite", he said.

Meanwhile Vee Gani from the KZN Parents' Association feels this is a fair decision.

"Those pupils who had nothing to do with leaked papers will no, unfortunately, have to rewrite but there positive from this is there is now a second chance at doing better on the papers" he said.
