Union heads to court over dismissed Greyhound workers
The Democratised Transport Logistics and Allied Workers’ Union (Detawu) has called on luxury coach operator Greyhound to re-employ workers who lost their jobs last year.
The bus service, previously owned by Unitrans Passenger, was sold following the financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The luxury buses are expected back on the roads this week, but the trade union is not happy.
Detawu general-secretary Vusi Ntshangase says they are shocked at the speed of Greyhound’s return.
“We are very shocked that Greyhound is coming back to operations without plans and strategy in place to get back all the dismissed workers."

The workers remain unemployed and they have the pain of seeing their company resuming operations without them. This is totally unacceptable.”
Ntshangase says they will ask the court to force new owners to absorb the dismissed workers.
“We will be going to court against the old employer, and we will be persuading the court to place the new employer on terms to come up with a plan to ensure that the previously dismissed more than 700 workers are absorbed back into the company again.”
