Union caught off-guard by SA Post Office retrenchments
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The Communication Workers Union says it and workers have been caught off-guard by the SA Post Office's intention to retrench thousands of employees.

The postal service has for several years been posting financial losses, with one of the biggest of R2,3 billion seen during the 2020/21 financial period.
The union's Siphiwe Mdletshe says they are well aware of the dire financial state of the employer; hence one of the options under discussion was reducing working hours for the around 13 000 workers around the country.
He says despite these talks still ongoing, they were surprised to find out SAPO had decided to push ahead with retrenching workers.
"We have called for a meeting with all the stakeholders and the minister of communication and the minister of treasury and SAPO executives we want to have that meeting and be able to deal with the issues and we as a union have only one tool, which is a strike."
