Unemployment remains unchanged

Unemployment remained unchanged in Quarter 4 (Q4) of 2019, at 29.1%.
Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) announced on Tuesday that this is the first time since 2008 that unemployment did not decrease over the last three months of a year.
Statistician General, Risenga Maluleke, announced the latest labour data that shows unemployment standing at the same rate than in the third quarter of 2019.
“The results indicate that the number of employed persons increased by 45 000 to 16.4 million and the number of unemployed persons decreased by 8 000 to 6.7 million,” he said.

While the rate of unemployment remained unchanged in Q4 of 2019, the data by Stats SA revealed that there was a 2% increase in unemployment during the same period of 2018.
South Africa’s official unemployment rate remained unchanged at 29,1% in Q4:2019 compared to Q3:2019.
