Unemployment: Not govt’s role to create jobs, says economist

Economist Dawie Roodt says it's not the government’s role to create jobs.

South Africa’s youth remain vulnerable, with unemployment increasing by 87-thousand to 4.7-million in the fourth quarter of last year. 


Job creation has been the common theme of election manifestos ahead of next month’s polls. 


Roodt says real job creation can only happen when the private sector is in a position to actively employ more people as the economy grows.

"Politicians need to create an environment in the private sector, grow the economy then jobs will be a result as well. Jobs should never be the objective. The objective must always be economic growth and then jobs will happen, that is the right approach."
